Grant Tuer trains Pepsea out of his yard in Birkby, North Yorkshire, and this season the operation has sent out 24 winners, so there is clearly a confidence in how horses are being prepared there. Tuer has spoken about Pepsea in positive terms — describing him as a big, strong type who he expects to improve with age, while acknowledging the horse is still a little green and finding his feet. That kind of raw, unpolished quality is actually quite common in horses who go on to improve significantly once they settle into racing and start to understand the job. The trainer's view is that Pepsea is competitive enough to win a race and that better days are ahead as he matures through his three-year-old season.
With just one race to his name and a run as recently as yesterday, Pepsea is still very much at the beginning of his story. The honest summary is that there is not a lot of evidence yet — but what there is points in the right direction. A yard with a productive season behind it, a trainer who believes in the horse, and a debut second. For now, that is enough to make him one worth watching.
