Orbital Chime

His two wins came more than three years apart — the first at Redcar in October 2022, the second at Southwell in November 2025, about seven months ago. A gap that wide between victories is usually a sign of a horse that needs everything to go right on the day. What makes the current moment interesting is that trainer James Owen picked him up from an online sale in February, essentially rescuing him from a yard where he had become, in Owen's own words, a bad debt — a horse nobody quite knew what to do with. That kind of fresh start can occasionally unlock something.

Owen is based at Newmarket and is having a productive season — 205 winners sent out already, which is a yard operating with real momentum. He admits it has taken a few races to get the measure of Orbital Chime, but he was notably encouraged by a run at Ayr recently, where the horse finished fifth in what Owen described as a very competitive race. The trainer believes he is ready to kick on. Jockey PJ McDonald, who knows the horse well, has ridden him ten times for a single win together — so there is a familiarity there, even if the results have been modest.

The form figures from his last six races read 6–6–6–2–3, which shows a horse coming back into contention without quite getting there. He has typically been running in Class 4 company — mid-tier races — without managing a win at that level in 13 attempts. If Owen is right that Ayr showed something real, then a step back down in grade or a drop to a smaller, easier race might be all it takes. Orbital Chime has raced just yesterday, so he is clearly fit and active. Whether the next win arrives soon or not, this is a horse in the hands of a confident trainer with a point to prove.
