Operation Gimcrack

The first win came at Southwell in January 2026, which broke what must have been a frustrating wait for Bryan Smart's yard at Sutton Bank in North Yorkshire. Smart is having a productive season — 16 winners sent out already — and Operation Gimcrack has contributed two of those, including a win at Newcastle as recently as late February. Newcastle is a proper track with a straight mile that suits certain types of horse, and winning there is a more meaningful result than it might first appear.

Class 6 is the entry level of British racing, the division where horses compete who aren't knocking on the door of the big occasions. Operation Gimcrack has spent almost all of its career there — 14 of its 21 races — and won 2 of those 14, a 14% win rate that actually compares reasonably well against the class as a whole. This isn't a horse destined for the grand stage, but it is one that has learned to be competitive in its own lane.

One detail worth noting is that regular jockey Harrison Shaw has yet to ride this horse to a win across seven attempts together — 0 from 7, which is a streak that will be on both their minds next time out. The two victories have come with other riders in the saddle. Whether that changes anything going forward is the kind of subplot that keeps a yard's mornings interesting.

The horse clearly prefers normal ground conditions — both career wins have come on a standard surface, from 7 races on that going, a win rate of 29% or nearly 1 in 3. That is a sharp contrast to its record elsewhere. Racing just yesterday, Operation Gimcrack is as current as it gets. A horse in form, on the right ground, is worth keeping an eye on.
