Oneforthegutter

The Ascot win in July 2023 was where it all started. First career win, at one of the most famous tracks in the world, in a top-level Class 2 race. Six months later it backed that up at Southwell on an all-weather surface in December — showing it can handle very different conditions — and then, almost two years on, it returned to the top table with a Class 2 win at Newmarket's July course in the summer of 2025. Three wins, three decent stages. The horse clearly knows how to pick its moments.

What makes the picture a little more complicated is the recent form. Those three wins are spread across 35 races, and the last six runs read 7-8-15-11-11-17 — finishing well down the field each time. The Newmarket win in July 2025 was 10 months ago now, and the horse hasn't threatened to add to its tally since. At seven years old, and competing at this level, that drought is worth watching.

Ian Williams trains out of Portway in Worcestershire, and his yard has been in seriously good form this season — 96 winners and counting, which is a big number for any stable. Despite that, regular jockey Richard Kingscote has ridden Oneforthegutter nine times without winning together. Nine rides, zero wins is a notable blank, though it says as much about how hard these Class 2 races are as it does about the partnership.

This is a horse that competes almost exclusively at the top end — 26 of its 35 races have been at Class 2, winning 3 of those 26, roughly 1 in every 9. For a horse at that level, just staying in the conversation is an achievement. Whether another moment of magic is still in there remains to be seen, but Oneforthegutter has earned the right to keep trying.
