Nogo's Dream

Richard Hughes, who trains the horse out of Upper Lambourn in Berkshire, put it plainly during a stable visit last autumn: some people don't get this horse, but he does. His logic is hard to argue with — a yard full of horses finishing second nearly every time would be a profitable yard. Hughes has described Nogo's Dream as quirky, and there have been experiments with equipment to try and unlock whatever it is holding him back. He finished fourth at Sandown after getting no room to run, which is a theme with him: he needs things to fall his way, and when they don't, the win slips away again.

The horse clearly has surface preferences that are worth noting. On normal conditions he has won 2 from 12 races — about 1 in every 6 — and on fast, dry ground he has an even better record, winning 2 from 10 (1 in every 5). That combination makes him a horse to watch closely when the sun has been out. His most recent win came at Windsor in June 2025, where jockey Oisin Murphy spoke afterwards about the horse being in great shape. Windsor's straight finish, where a tailwind can help a horse's speed carry through to the line, clearly suited him.

Most of his racing life has been spent at Class 5 level — the everyday bread-and-butter level of British racing — where he has won 2 from 18 races. His regular partner George Rooke has been aboard for 14 of those attempts but has found the winner's enclosure just once together. It is a combination that works often enough to persist with, but not quite often enough to dominate. Nogo's Dream raced just yesterday, which tells you everything about his constitution: whatever else you say about him, he keeps showing up.
