Night Emperor

His recent form tells a story of a horse running hard but not quite getting there. In his last six outings he finished fourth, first, fifth, fourth, fourth, and sixth—so one win surrounded by four fourth-place finishes and a sixth. That clustering of fourths is the mark of a horse who belongs in the races he contests but cannot quite master them. He raced as recently as yesterday, which means Tina Jackson's yard is keeping him active and engaged. The trainer has sent out nine winners already this season, so there is competence behind the scenes even if Night Emperor himself remains a long way from a prolific career.

Class 4 racing—the level where Night Emperor typically competes—is a bruising middle ground: better than the lowest tiers, but still a long way from the prestige races that define great horses. He has never won at that level, taking his only victory in what appears to have been an easier race at Redcar. Whether he can climb back there, or whether that July success was his ceiling, will become clear over the coming months. For now, he is a horse in work, honest and trying, but still waiting for a second win to confirm he belongs anywhere at all.
