That single win came at Goodwood in June 2024, and it remains the high point of a career that has not scaled those heights since. Goodwood is one of the most distinctive tracks in Britain — built into the Sussex Downs with sweeping bends and undulating ground — and winning there means something. Whether that day represented Never Dream at its very best or just a happy alignment of conditions and competition, it has not been repeated in the nearly two years since.

The recent form makes sobering reading: an eighth, a fifth, a second, two fourths, and a seventh across the last six outings, with no win to show for it. That second place is the only real flicker of promise in a sequence that otherwise suggests a horse finding its level rather than building toward something. At Class 5 — the bread-and-butter tier of British racing, where the competition is modest — it has won just 1 from 7 races at that level, a win rate of roughly 1 in 7. You would hope for better from a horse operating at the easier end of the scale.

Marcus Tregoning, who trains Never Dream, has sent out four winners from his yard this season, so the stable is ticking over without setting the world alight. Tregoning is a patient, experienced trainer with a reputation for placing horses carefully, and Never Dream raced just yesterday, which at least confirms it is in good enough shape to keep competing. Whether there is another win in the locker — ideally back at the track where it already knows how to celebrate — remains the question worth watching.
