Mrs Trump

Trained by Paul Midgley at his yard in Westow, North Yorkshire — a stable that has sent out 39 winners already this season, so clearly knows how to place a horse — Mrs Trump operates almost entirely at Class 6, the entry level of British racing. She has won 5 of her 28 races at that level, roughly 1 in every 6, which tells you she is competitive without being exceptional. What the numbers don't show is the consistency. She finishes in the places constantly. She gives you something almost every time.

The key to getting the best from her, Midgley has explained, is understanding what she needs. She wants six furlongs on a flat track — over five furlongs she gets outpaced and never finds her feet, and over a longer trip she runs out of stamina before the line. Get the conditions right and a different horse emerges. On wet, muddy ground she has won 2 of just 7 races — nearly 1 in 3 — which is a striking number and suggests the extra grip suits her style of running. She also has a particular affinity with Redcar, winning twice from five visits there, including her first career win back in May 2024. Two wins from five attempts at one track is the kind of record that makes a trainer keep coming back.

Her most regular partner is jockey Mark Winn, who has ridden her in 14 races and won 3 of them — a win rate of about 1 in every 5 rides together, well above her overall average. That partnership clearly works. Her most recent win came at Nottingham in July 2025, and while she hasn't added to that tally in her last six runs — her recent finishes read 7-5-4-5-8-7 — she raced just yesterday and remains very much in training and active.

At six years old, with 39 races on the clock, Mrs Trump is exactly the kind of horse that fills out a card week after week and makes racing function. She will not win a big race. But she will try her absolute best every time, and in racing, that counts for more than people realise.
