Rebecca Menzies, who trains him at her yard in Morden, County Durham, describes it as a strong piece of form — a horse winning well, not scrambling home — which makes the 23 months since all the more curious. He joined Menzies' yard after being bought from Jedd O'Keeffe at the September sales, and she clearly sees more to come, pointing to his size, scope, and pedigree as reasons to believe he can improve given more time and a fresh start.

At the distances where he seems most comfortable — between a mile and three furlongs and a mile and four furlongs — he has won 1 race from 5 attempts, a rate of 1 in 5, which is actually his best record anywhere. That's not a coincidence. He's a middle-distance horse at heart, and at Class 5 level — the kind of everyday races that make up the bread and butter of British racing — he has won 1 from 6, roughly 1 in 6, which is respectable without being spectacular. A Menzies yard that has sent out 36 winners this season is clearly capable of placing horses well, so the fact that Monsieur Melee hasn't added to his tally says something about where he currently sits — a horse with ability who is waiting for things to click.

He raced just yesterday and is very much a live, active runner. But if Menzies' instinct is right — that a winter break and a fresh campaign will unlock something — then the most interesting chapter of his career may still be ahead of him. Sometimes a horse needs a reset more than it needs another race.
