Mesaafi

What catches the eye is Mesaafi's love of normal ground. On standard, dry conditions, the horse wins roughly 3 times in every 10 races — a 30 per cent rate that is genuinely solid and nearly three times better than its overall form. This is the sort of preference that matters to a trainer and makes ground conditions worth watching on race day. When Ross Burdon's Newmarket yard declares Mesaafi for a race, a glance at the going forecast becomes useful information. Mesaafi last won at Windsor on 1 June, and recent form shows some wobble: a poor eighth place eight days ago, but before that a fourth and a first, suggesting the horse can still find the board when conditions align.

Class 4 racing — the mid-range tier where most of the sport's volume happens — is Mesaafi's natural home. Two wins from 11 races at this level is respectable, if not spectacular. Jockey Jack Mitchell has ridden the horse seven times and managed one win, a 14 per cent return that reflects a partnership without obvious spark but one that works. Mesaafi remains active and racing regularly, the kind of consistent if unflashy performer that racing depends on: not the horse that catches headlines, but the horse that shows up, races honestly, and keeps owners coming back to the yard.
