Twenty-one months have passed without a victory, and the last six races have produced nothing better than a fourth place, with the most recent effort resulting in a non-finish. That run of results will test the patience of any yard, but Gerald Stephen Quinn's operation in Ballymena, County Antrim has kept the horse in work and running — which suggests they still see something worth chasing.

What's curious is where the horse has struggled most. The bulk of its races — nine in total — have come at Class 5 level, which is the entry tier of British racing, and it has yet to win at that grade. Not once from nine attempts. And yet its one career win came at a distance of around a mile and a quarter, where it has actually shown some ability: one win from seven races at that trip works out at 14%, or roughly 1 in every 7 — a noticeably better return than its overall record suggests. Distance clearly matters with this horse.

Jockey Rowan Scott has partnered Mayor Of Maghera six times, winning once together — that's roughly a 1-in-6 relationship, which actually mirrors the horse's overall numbers and says more about the horse's consistency than the partnership itself. The yard has sent out two winners this season, so it's not a dormant operation, and the horse raced as recently as yesterday, which means it's very much part of the current picture.

At its best, over a mile to a mile and a quarter on a fair day, Mayor Of Maghera has shown it can find the line first. The question is whether it can do it again — and whether the right conditions, track, and distance will align the way they did that August afternoon at Musselburgh.
