That one win came at Stratford-on-Avon in October 2023, and it has not been repeated in the 31 months since. Trainer Mel Rowley was candid about it afterwards: this was a horse who had hinted at ability for years without delivering, a horse who had sent his team to the races full of hope only to disappoint on the day. Stratford seemed to unlock something — the right track, the right trip, the right conditions. Rowley noted he wants summer jumping on fast ground rather than slogging through the mud, which narrows his windows considerably. It was not the strongest race, she admitted, but you still have to win them, and he was pulling clear at the line.

What is perhaps most interesting is how Rowley describes him now versus how he started. Early on he was a closed book — nobody quite knew what distance suited him or what ground he wanted. Over time, he has turned into what she calls a consistent campaigner, a horse they can place deliberately in races around two and a half miles at Class 5 level, which is the bread-and-butter tier of British jump racing. In those races he has won 1 from 23, a 4% win rate, which tells you he is competitive without being dominant. His jockey Alex Edwards has been aboard for 19 of his 33 races, winning just the once together — a partnership built on familiarity rather than fireworks.

His recent form reads 7-2-3 across his last meaningful finishes, which suggests he is still there or thereabouts, still placing, still trying. He raced just yesterday. At nine, with one win on the board and the Stratford summer card potentially on the horizon, Martalmix'jac is not a horse chasing glory. He is a horse doing his job steadily, waiting for the day when everything clicks again.
