What makes Marcus genuinely interesting is how consistent his near-misses have become. His last six runs read 3rd, 4th, 4th, 4th, 6th, 7th — always competitive, never quite getting there. He is not being hammered out of sight; he is the horse finishing just behind the winner, time after time. The frustrating thing is that the ability is clearly there. The winning is not.

Rob Hornby has partnered Marcus seven times and knows this story well — zero wins from those seven races together. That is not a reflection on Hornby, one of the more capable riders around; it simply tells you that Marcus has been giving his best and coming up a little short regardless of who is in the saddle. The pair have had their share of near-misses without managing to turn one into a victory.

Charlie Wallis trains Marcus out of his yard in Ardleigh, Essex, and has sent out seven winners this season, so the operation clearly knows how to get a horse to the front. Marcus, though, competes almost exclusively at Class 6 — the entry level of British racing — and has not won in 28 races at that grade. If he cannot win at the most accessible level of the sport, it raises the quiet but unavoidable question of whether he ever will. And yet here he is, still racing, still placing, still turning up.

Perhaps that is the most honest thing you can say about Marcus: he is not a star, but he is not a quitter either. Some horses drift out of racing when results dry up. This one just keeps coming back for more. Whether that counts as admirable persistence or stubborn optimism probably depends on where you are standing.
