That's nearly double his overall rate, which is the clearest signal in his record: get him going short and you're wasting his time, let him stretch out and something different emerges. His best level appears to be Class 5, the everyday bread-and-butter tier of the sport, where he's also won 2 from 11 at that same 18% clip. He's not a horse built for the big occasions — he's built for grinding out results in the right conditions.

The problem is that he hasn't found one of those results in a long time. His last win came at Chelmsford back in January 2024 — that's 28 months ago now, a stretch that covers his last six races, all of which have ended in single-figure finishes well off the pace. Jockey Grace McEntee has been in the saddle for 12 of his races and they've won together just once — a rate of 1 in 12 — so even the most familiar partnership hasn't unlocked anything new lately.

He raced just yesterday, which means he's still very much active and in the yard's plans. Max Young's stable has sent out just one winner so far this season, so Man Of Riddles isn't exactly operating from a powerhouse base. He's a horse that invites patience more than excitement — an eight-year-old with a very specific profile, waiting for the right long-distance opportunity to remind everyone what he's occasionally capable of.
