The recent form reads 2-5-4-8-2-2 across the last six outings — a run of placings and minor finishes that suggests the horse is still sound and competitive, but no longer quite able to find that final burst. Harry Charlton's Beckhampton yard has trained 38 winners this season, so the infrastructure is there, but something has shifted for Magical Merlin.

There are small glimmers worth examining. On fast, dry ground, Magical Merlin transforms slightly, winning 2 of 11 races — a rate nearly double the career average. Even more striking is its record over sprint distances of five to six and a half furlongs, where it has won 3 of 8 races, a 38% win rate that puts it in genuinely competitive territory. The problem is that Magical Merlin typically runs in Class 4 races, where it has won just 1 of 16 outings, suggesting it may simply be operating at a level where the competition has moved past it. With Millie Wonnacott aboard for seven races without a win, a change in partnership or a drop to its ideal ground conditions could offer the horse its best chance to rediscover the form that brought success at Epsom three years ago.
