Mafting

Mafting is a four-year-old trained by David O'Meara at Upper Helmsley in North Yorkshire, and the yard is clearly firing on all cylinders this season with 107 winners already on the board. O'Meara's team tend to place their horses shrewdly, and Mafting's record supports that idea. The horse has found its best form over a mile and three furlongs to a mile and four — a searching stamina test — winning 2 from 7 races at those distances, a rate of roughly 1 in 3.5. That is meaningfully better than its record over shorter trips, suggesting the team have worked out exactly where this horse belongs.

Dry, fast ground also seems to unlock something in Mafting. On those conditions the record reads 2 wins from 6 races — 1 in every 3 — compared to nothing on softer or wetter surfaces. Put it all together: fast ground, a mile and a half, Redcar — and you have a horse operating at a completely different level to its everyday self.

Recent form has been encouraging. Reading the last six runs from most recent backwards — a win, a second, a first, a seventh, a fourth, a third — there is a pattern of consistent involvement, with that winning streak of back-to-back victories at Redcar the obvious highlight. The most recent of those wins came just three weeks ago, and with the horse having raced as recently as yesterday, it is clearly in a busy and productive spell. One gentle caveat: most of its career races have come at Class 4 level, where it is still searching for a win from five attempts. When things step up in class, the results have not yet followed. But at its favourite track, on fast ground, over a distance that suits — Mafting is as reliable as it gets.
