Harry Skelton, one of the country's top jump jockeys, has ridden Lone Soldier five times without a win between them, though it would be unfair to read too much into that — plenty of good horses have taken a while to find their moment regardless of who is in the saddle. The training operation at Farnsfield in Nottinghamshire, run by Charles and Adam Pogson, has sent out 12 winners already this season, so the yard clearly knows what it is doing. Getting Lone Soldier to finally score — at eight years old, no less — will have felt like a satisfying reward for everyone involved.

What makes this horse quietly compelling is simple persistence. Some horses win early and fade; others take the long route. Lone Soldier has been around the block, has filled the places often enough to stay interesting, and has now proven he can get his nose in front. Whether this is the start of a new chapter or a one-off peak is the question worth watching.
