His most recent victory came on 14 May 2024 at Ayr, but that success is now nearly two years in the past, and his last six races have yielded nothing but placed finishes. The reasons for that drought are physical, not mysterious. Earlier this year Goldie discovered that Kelpie Grey had given himself a stress fracture — a sign of the horse's aggressive racing style — and elected to have a screw surgically inserted to stabilize the injury. By early May 2025, the trainer reported the horse was recovering well and seemed sound again. Goldie described him as "improving" and "athletic," but also brutally honest about the conditions he needs. On faster, firmer ground, Kelpie Grey is vulnerable; with cut and give underfoot, he becomes what Goldie calls "tasty."
When Paul Mulrennan is in the saddle, the partnership sharpens considerably. Together they have won three of 16 races — a 19% win rate — which is notably better than the horse's overall record. Yet he has rarely been competitive at the highest levels. In Class 4 races, the bread-and-butter category for him, he has managed just one win from 15 attempts, a harsh reminder that even on his good days he is a competitive horse rather than a standout. Goldie indicated in spring 2025 that Kelpie Grey was roughly six weeks away from racing again. When he does return, it will be worth following his form closely at Musselburgh on a soft surface — that is where he genuinely threatens.
