A second place finish is in there, which at least shows Katzoff can get competitive on the right day, but a thirteenth suggests the gap between its best and worst runs is a wide one. With no win from the last six races and none at all from 39 career attempts, this is a horse that has consistently found one — or several — too good. That said, it raced just yesterday, which means the team at Clonalvy are clearly not giving up on finding the right opportunity.

Amy Jo Hayes has been the regular partner in the saddle, taking the ride in 5 of those races without a winner between them. That is not a criticism of either horse or rider — sometimes a partnership simply hasn't clicked in the right race yet, and the numbers here reflect the horse's overall profile rather than any single weak link. Trainer Ian Patrick Donoghue has had a productive season with 26 winners sent out from his County Meath yard, which tells you the operation knows how to prepare a winner. Katzoff, at least so far, has been the exception rather than the rule.

At nine years old with a blank win column, Katzoff is a horse that asks more questions than it answers. What keeps a horse like this in training? Sometimes it is the hope of finding the perfect conditions, the right field, the right track on the right day. The placed finishes prove it is not completely out of its depth. Whether that elusive first win ever comes is the open question — but with a race logged just yesterday, the search is very much still on.
