The recent form figures — 3, 4, 3, 6, 4, 6 — tell a fairly consistent story. Kastellion is finishing in the top four regularly, which means it is not being outclassed, but the two worst finishes in sixth show there are days when things simply do not click. At its level of competition, the difference between third and first can come down to fine margins, and so far those margins have not gone in its favour.
Mel Rowley trains the horse out of Bridgnorth in Shropshire, a yard that has sent out 12 winners this season — a solid tally that shows the team knows how to get a horse to the line first. The fact that Kastellion has not yet joined that list is not through lack of trying. At the Class 4 level where it typically races — the middle tier of the sport, not the glamour end but competitive enough — it has run three times without a win. Zero from three is a frustrating record, but the placing form shows it is not embarrassing itself either.
Raced just yesterday and still active, Kastellion is clearly a horse in regular work and one its trainer has not given up on. At six, it is no youngster still finding its feet, but horses can and do find winning form at this age. Whether Kastellion can turn its places into victories is the question the Rowley yard will be trying to answer over the coming weeks.
