Kapamazov

The numbers are stark. In nearly two dozen attempts, this horse has never once crossed the finish line first. But here is the thing: nine places from those 24 races means Kapamazov has finished in the frame — typically second, third, or fourth — more than a third of the time. This is not a horse that trails in last and heads home. It competes, consistently finishing close enough to matter, just never quite close enough to win. The recent form tells the same story in miniature: in the last six races, the finishes read 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 3rd, 8th, 3rd — a sequence that almost demands you shout "just once" at the screen.

Jockey Ben Poste has been aboard for 12 of those 24 races and is still looking for that breakthrough moment alongside this horse. Their partnership is one of the most patient in the sport — 12 races together, zero wins, and presumably a great deal of very close misses. At Class 5 level, which is where most horses begin to find their footing and pick up wins, Kapamazov has gone 0 from 15. That is the level at which this horse is expected to be competitive, and it is, just never the right kind of competitive.

Trainer Tony Carroll is no struggling handler hoping for a lucky break — his yard at Cropthorne in Worcestershire has sent out 136 winners already this season, which is a serious operation by any measure. The fact that Carroll keeps running Kapamazov suggests there is belief somewhere in the team that the win is coming. Kapamazov raced just yesterday and is clearly fit and active, which only adds to the sense that everyone involved is waiting for the day it finally clicks.

Some horses win young and fade. Kapamazov has done the opposite — nine years old, still racing, still placing, still waiting. Whether that first win ever arrives almost becomes secondary to the sheer persistence of the thing. It is hard not to root for a horse that simply refuses to give up, even if the winning post keeps arriving a nose too soon.
