Just King High

The recent form makes for difficult reading. Over the last six races the best finishes have been a pair of second places, sandwiched between some distinctly anonymous efforts — a couple of nines and an eighth. That is the shape of a horse that flickers briefly then fades, rather than one building toward something. Jockey Robert Havlin has partnered the horse five times without ever finding the winner's enclosure together, which is the kind of statistic that quietly tells you a lot.

What makes the situation genuinely puzzling is where Just King High competes. Class 6 is the lowest tier of British racing — the races designed to give horses exactly like this one a fighting chance. And yet in seven attempts at that level, the record reads zero wins. A horse that cannot win at the bottom of the ladder while being trained out of Newmarket, one of the sport's most prestigious bases, raises real questions. Ross Burdon's yard has sent out 12 winners this season, so it is not as though the whole operation is struggling — Just King High simply has not been able to convert opportunity into result.

The one bright spot is that the horse raced just yesterday, so it remains active and in work. Southwell, that all-weather track in Nottinghamshire where the only win came, might still hold the key. Sometimes a horse has an inexplicable affinity for a particular surface or track, and if the team can get the conditions right again, another moment like November 2024 is not entirely out of the question. Whether patience holds that long is a different matter entirely.
