Racecourses have their own personalities — different bends, different distances, different cambers — and some horses simply click with one venue in a way that defies easy explanation. Huntingdon appears to be Jack Sprat's place. Jockey Gavin Sheehan, who has ridden him in 13 of his 25 races and won twice together, described riding him at Huntingdon in notably specific terms: he talked about timing the challenge precisely, hunting down the leader and hitting the front at just the right moment, and even seeking out the less churned-up ground on the stands rail. That is a jockey who knows a horse inside out, and a horse who rewards that knowledge.

Trainer Jamie Snowden, whose Lambourn yard has been in outstanding form this season with 82 winners, describes Jack Sprat as a consistent sort who always wins his races when everything falls right. It has not always been straightforward — a spell racing over fences last year did not bring out the best in him — but a return to hurdles produced an encouraging second at Bangor, and his most recent win came at Exeter in January 2025. That was 15 months ago now, and his last six runs have not produced a victory, though a second place and two fourth-place finishes suggest he is not running badly.

He competes mostly at Class 4 level — the solid, workmanlike tier of British racing, a step or two below the top-tier races — and has won 2 from 19 races at that level, around 1 in every 10. He raced just yesterday and remains very much an active runner. At eight years old, with a specific course to aim at and a jockey who clearly understands him, Jack Sprat looks like exactly the kind of horse who can pop up and win when conditions and venue align.
