Ingleby Archie

The career arc is telling. Ingleby Archie spent a chunk of his early life finishing second — three times in a row at one point — before finally breaking through at Redcar in June 2024. Nicholls noted at the time that his winter preparation is deliberately low-key, so early-season runs tend to be needed rather than telling. That patience paid off, and the horse's most recent win, at York in May 2025, was the one that really caught the eye. York is one of the great tracks in Britain, and Nicholls was openly delighted: "a winner is a winner at York." The handicapper, as he predicted, will have taken notice.

The York win also flagged up one of Ingleby Archie's quirks. He can get wound up — literally. He "blew out" at Pontefract on one occasion, apparently overwhelmed before the race had even started, and Nicholls has spoken about the horse getting warm and anxious in the saddling boxes. Managing that temperament is part of the job. When it goes wrong, it goes badly wrong, as his recent run of six races without a win suggests — his last six results read 4th, 12th, 11th, 6th, 3rd, 11th, which is a mixed bag to put it kindly. But when conditions and mood align, he can produce a proper performance.

Most of his racing has come at Class 4 level — the fourth tier of British racing, solid, competitive company — where he has won just 1 from 13 races, a rate of roughly 1 in every 13 attempts at that grade. His most reliable partnership is with jockey Harrison Shaw, who has won 2 of their 9 races together, winning roughly 1 in every 4-and-a-half rides. Nicholls' yard has sent out 12 winners already this season, so the team is in decent form. Whether Ingleby Archie is ready to add to that tally is the question — but this is a horse who has surprised people before.
