What is encouraging is the recent form. Reading the last six races from most recent backwards — 11th, 4th, 2nd, 1st, 6th, 4th — you can see a horse that has been up and down but did peak at that Catterick win and followed it with a solid second. The 11th last time out is a bump in the road, though with a race just yesterday, there is clearly plenty of enthusiasm from the team to keep Hiccups busy and find another opportunity.

Distance seems to be the key. Over a mile and six furlongs to two miles — the longer end of the spectrum, where stamina matters more than pure speed — Hiccups has won 1 from 10 races at a 10% rate, which is meaningfully better than its overall record. That is roughly 1 in every 10 races at the right trip, compared to nothing at all over shorter distances. It is not a dramatic difference, but in a sport where small edges matter, it is a clear signal that getting the distance right gives Hiccups its best chance. Catterick itself, with its sharp turns and undulating track, suited well enough to produce that breakthrough, and it would be no surprise to see the team return there.

Competing almost exclusively at Class 6 — the lowest rung of British racing — Hiccups operates in races where the prize money is modest and the fields are made up of horses finding their level. Winning 1 from 12 at that level, roughly 1 in every 12, is not a dominant record, but it reflects a horse that belongs in these races rather than being out of its depth. At six years old, the hope will simply be that the Catterick win was a turning point rather than a one-off.
