Her record over middle distances of around a mile and three or four furlongs is where she shows up best, winning 1 from 8 races at those trips, a win rate of 12%. That's slim, but it at least points to where her trainer Harry Eustace — based at the well-regarded Newmarket yard that has sent out 23 winners this season — will be looking to place her. Eustace clearly knows how to get horses winning; Guendolen just hasn't been one of the easy ones.
The partnership with jockey Kaiya Fraser is an interesting case study in persistence without reward. Fraser has ridden Guendolen seven times and is yet to win on her — 0 from 7 — but they keep coming back together, which suggests the team sees something worth sticking with. Most of Guendolen's racing has come at Class 5 level, the lower end of the British racing ladder, where she has run nine times without winning. That's a tough record to look past, though it also means there's no great mystery about what she is: a horse who can make races competitive, find a place, and occasionally threaten — just not one who has made a habit of crossing the line first.
She raced just yesterday, so she is clearly being kept busy, and the Leicester win remains a marker that she can do it when things fall right. Whether she can do it again is the question Eustace and Fraser are still trying to answer.
