After one Epsom win, he described Gordon Grey as "a very uncomplicated horse" who likes to set his own pace and essentially runs his own race. "I wasn't in charge out there — he was. I was just a passenger," the jockey said afterwards, which tells you something about how Gordon Grey goes about his business. He is not a horse that needs nursing or cajoling. He runs best when left alone to do what he does. Baker even noted that within the final furlong, Gordon Grey "almost wanted to stop because he knew his job was done" — a lovely detail that captures a horse who races on his own terms.
