Fuji Mountain

That distinction matters. Chester is one of the most unusual tracks in British racing — a near-circular loop where position and track knowledge count for a great deal. Some horses simply suit it; Fuji Mountain clearly does. Both career wins have come there, the first in July 2024 and the second in September 2024. Since then, six races have passed without a return to the winner's enclosure, and it has now been over 20 months since that last win. A four-year-old with two wins from 21 races and a quiet winter behind it could easily be overlooked — but the Chester record gives any observer genuine reason to stay interested.

The partnership with jockey Zak Wheatley has been the consistent thread through the horse's career. They have raced together 13 times, producing both of those wins — a win rate of roughly 1 in every 6-and-a-half races together, which is noticeably better than the horse's overall average. In racing, when a horse and jockey combination is clearly working, the yard tend to stick with it, and this one has been given plenty of time to develop.

Fuji Mountain is trained by Declan Carroll at Malton in North Yorkshire, a yard that has sent out 22 winners already this season — so there is form and confidence in the stable. Carroll's horses at this level tend to be competitive without always winning, and Fuji Mountain fits that profile: it has placed six times from 21 races and competes mostly at Class 4, where it wins roughly 2 in every 7 races at that level. A career total like this suggests a solid, consistent performer rather than a star — but one with a very specific track where the stars align.

With a race just yesterday, it is clearly fit and active. Whether Chester comes around again soon enough is the question worth watching.
