Figurehead

The recent form makes for interesting reading, though not entirely discouraging. Working backwards from the most recent run, the last six races show a blank, a blank, a 16th, a 10th, then a 4th and a 3rd. That upturn in the middle of the sequence — two top-four finishes — suggested the horse might finally be finding some consistency, but the last three runs have been a step back. With a race just yesterday, Figurehead is clearly still in active training and being kept busy, which at least tells you the yard believes there's still something to aim at.

The partnership with jockey Jack Cleary is the most striking subplot here. Thirteen races together and not a single win between them — yet the team keeps coming back to the same combination. That kind of loyalty to a jockey usually means something is working, even if the result sheet doesn't show it. Perhaps the horse simply hasn't found the right day yet, or perhaps Cleary knows this horse better than anyone and the yard is playing a long game. Either way, 0 from 13 is a tough record to defend.

Figurehead is the kind of horse that regular racegoers develop a soft spot for — familiar, honest, always in the field, never quite delivering. Whether that first win ever comes at nine years old is genuinely uncertain, but the the yard are clearly not giving up. The horse raced yesterday. It will probably race again next week. That, in its own way, says something.
