Fierce

Paul Midgley's yard in Westow, North Yorkshire, has sent out 39 winners this season alone, so they clearly know how to place a horse. And Fierce is a good example of the Midgley method. The trainer picked him up cheaply — around 1,000 guineas at a horses-in-training sale — partly because he'd run poorly before the auction and looked like a risk. Midgley had already trained the horse's brother, The Bell Conductor, so he knew the family and backed his judgement. A small operation on the horse's soft palate followed, and Fierce began to repay the faith.

His most recent win, at Wolverhampton in August 2025, is perhaps the most telling story of his career. By Midgley's own admission, Fierce had no right to win that day on the bare numbers — but the pace up front collapsed, the race came back to him, and he was sharp enough to take advantage. That is not luck so much as readiness: a horse in form, placed correctly, waiting for his moment. It also ended a drought that has since extended again — he has not won in his last six races, with his recent form reading 2nd, 3rd, and then a slide back through the field.

Tom Queally rides him more than anyone else, and their partnership has produced 2 wins from 14 races together — about 1 in every 7. The curious wrinkle in Fierce's record is that he has never won at Class 4 level, going 0 from 14 in those races. That is the tier where he most often competes, which suggests the competition there has generally just been a notch too stiff. His wins have tended to come in slightly different circumstances, when conditions or race dynamics have played into his hands. He is the kind of horse a knowledgeable friend would describe as one to follow rather than blindly back — but absolutely one to keep on your radar.
