Faustus

The overall career picture is modest but respectable. Five wins and 14 places from 46 races, with most of its racing done at Class 3 level — some of the more competitive mid-tier races in Britain — where it has won just 1 from 15, or roughly 1 in every 15 attempts. That tells you Faustus is a horse that needs everything to fall right. When it does, and particularly when the ground dries out, it can be genuinely competitive. On fast, dry ground it has won 2 from 12 races, or roughly 1 in 6 — a meaningfully better record than its overall average suggests.

The partnership with jockey Jack Mitchell is worth noting. Together they have won 2 of their 7 races — nearly 1 in 3 — which is a sharp improvement on what Faustus achieves with anyone else in the saddle. The last of those wins came at Newbury in July 2025, which means everything clicked at exactly the right moment: the right track, the right jockey, the right conditions. The Cook and Bridger yard has sent out 7 winners already this season, so there is clearly some form in the stable.

The recent run of results — finishing 8th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 3rd, and 7th across its last six races — tells an honest story of a horse that has lost its way a little. It has not won in 6 races, and the bulk of those efforts are forgettable. But Faustus raced just yesterday, which means it is fit and active, and its first career win came at Newcastle back in March 2022 — so this is a horse with a long, battle-hardened career behind it. Patient people who wait for Newbury on a dry day may yet be rewarded again.
