Ezmerellda

Her trainer, Sarah-Jayne Davies, based out of a small yard in Leominster, has spoken warmly about Ezmerellda's potential. Davies noted that the horse had jumped well in a Listed race at Newbury — a high-level race that only the better horses get entered for — and that a Cheltenham run was cut short by a fall when she looked likely to finish third. That kind of mishap stings, because a top-three finish at Cheltenham carries real prestige and opens doors. It's the sort of near-miss that lingers.

What's striking is that when Ezmerellda races over long distances — two miles or more — she goes 1 win from 14 attempts, a 7% return. That doesn't sound flashy, but for a horse at her level, distance is clearly where she belongs. She's also shown her best form at Class 4 level, winning 1 of her 6 races there — roughly 1 in 6, which is a decent ratio compared to her overall record. Davies has 5 winners on the board already this season from a small operation, which suggests the yard knows how to place their horses when the time is right.

One of her part-owners described Ezmerellda as a "nice big filly" after the Doncaster win, and at the time flagged the Go North Series final at Musselburgh as a possible target. Whether that route is still being considered isn't clear, but it gives a sense that the team around her see a horse with a specific path worth following. She raced just yesterday, so she remains very much in active training. For a horse whose win came over two years ago, patience is clearly something this yard has in good supply. Whether Ezmerellda can reward that patience is the open question.
