The most recent run, just yesterday, returned a 13th-place finish — a jarring exception to a pattern that otherwise looks like a horse knocking on the door. Before that, four consecutive third-place finishes in a row. That kind of consistency in the minor positions is either encouraging or maddening depending on how you look at it, and at three years old, there is still time for the argument to be settled.
Regular jockey Harry Davies has been in the saddle for five of those eight races, and the pair are still searching for their first win together. That is not unusual in itself — some combinations take time to click — but with the clock ticking on a young horse's development, the partnership will be hoping a breakthrough comes sooner rather than later.
What works in Extraterrestrial's favour is the operation behind it. Simon and Ed Crisford train out of Newmarket, one of the heartlands of British racing, and have sent out 79 winners already this season — that is a yard operating at genuine volume and with clear ability to place horses well. When a stable of that size and quality keeps running a horse, it usually means they believe there is a win in it somewhere. The question for Extraterrestrial is simply when.
