What makes Enfjaar genuinely interesting is how sharply his preferences have emerged. On normal ground he is a different proposition entirely, winning 2 of his last 3 races on that surface—a 67% win rate that tells you this is a horse who thrives when conditions suit him. More striking still is his command over the 1m3f to 1m4f distance band, where he has won 3 of 5 races (60%). At Chelmsford, his specialist course, he has won twice from three attempts. His Class 2 victory at York in July 2024 was the breakthrough that mattered, and the owners' representative was bold enough to compare the win to an earlier horse from the yard who went on to win at Group level—the top of the sport.

Roger Varian's Newmarket yard, which has sent out 87 winners already this season, has clearly been patient with Enfjaar's development. The horse had bone bruising last year and was not over-raced, which has allowed him to mature without burnout. Varian's comments in spring suggest genuine ambition: if Enfjaar continues to win in good company, he could be aimed at genuine Group races rather than being shuttled around handicaps. The Listed Festival Stakes at Goodwood in May was pencilled in as a test. What happens there will dictate whether this horse is simply a reliable handicap winner or something with higher ceiling. The form says he is knocking on the door. The next months will tell us whether he walks through it.
