Doing it twice, including at Newbury — one of the sport's most prestigious venues — means Documenting has genuinely mixed it with the best. The career prize money of roughly £74,000 reflects a horse that has consistently competed at the sharp end, not just made up the numbers.

The place to watch Documenting, though, is Wolverhampton. In five races there, the horse has won twice — that is a 40% win rate at one track, which is a remarkable record for any horse, let alone one competing mainly against top-level rivals. There is something about Wolverhampton's all-weather oval that suits this horse perfectly, and the most recent win there came on 26 December 2024. That was 16 months ago, but for a 13-year-old still active and placing in recent outings, the door back to the winner's enclosure there is not closed.

The partnership with jockey Jack Mitchell is worth noting. In 17 races together they have won 4 times — that is nearly 1 in every 4 races, a remarkable ratio given that Documenting's overall win rate is closer to 1 in 8. Something clearly clicks between horse and rider, and when Mitchell takes the saddle on normal ground, the combination looks even more dangerous: 4 of Documenting's 5 career wins have come on standard conditions.

Trainer Kevin Frost, based at Averham Park in Nottinghamshire, has sent out 23 winners this season, suggesting a yard operating with real confidence. Recent form shows a few mid-pack finishes — fifth, fifth, ninth, eleventh in the last four runs — but nothing about a 13-year-old still competing at this level suggests it is time to stop watching.
