Distinction

What makes Distinction worth watching is the untapped potential when conditions align. Put this horse on wet or muddy ground and something clicks — it wins roughly one in every five races in the rain, a 20 per cent win rate that stands well above its usual form. Pair that with the right track and distance and the picture sharpens further. At Beverley, Distinction is genuinely special: three wins from eight races there, a 37 per cent win rate that marks the horse out as a course specialist. Over distances of a mile and three furlongs to a mile and four furlongs, it has won twice from eleven attempts — again, better than the overall average.

The horse also shows real partnership with jockey P J McDonald, who has steered three wins from fourteen rides together, a 21 per cent return that suggests McDonald knows how to get the best from Distinction. Trainer John Mackie, based at Church Broughton in Derbyshire, runs a yard that has sent out 16 winners already this season, so there is clearly competence in the stable. Distinction typically races at the lower end of the handicap ladder, competing in Class 6 races where it has won four from 33 attempts. The horse is active enough — it raced just a day ago — to suggest there are more opportunities coming. The wait for that ninth win has already been long, but for a horse that can dominate at Beverley and thrives in wet conditions, the right race may yet be waiting.
