The recent form makes for sobering reading: a fifth, two fourths, and two blank finishes across the last five races, with the most recent run coming just yesterday. Those fourth-place efforts are the most telling detail here — close enough to suggest the horse belongs on a racecourse, but consistently just short of picking up any prize money. It is the profile of a horse that competes without threatening, which is a difficult cycle to break.
Tim Vaughan's yard at Aberthin in the Vale of Glamorgan has had a decent enough season, sending out 11 winners, so the operation clearly knows how to get horses winning. Diligent Militia simply hasn't been one of them. In three races at Class 4 level — which represents the middle tier of everyday racing, not the glamour end of the sport — the horse has drawn a blank every time. That is not a catastrophic level to be competing at, but it does mean the horse has been given plenty of fair opportunities and hasn't taken any of them.
Whether there is a change of tactic, a different track, or a softer field that might unlock something remains to be seen. For now, Diligent Militia is one of those horses that fills out a field without threatening to win it — which is a more important role in racing than it sounds, but not one that makes for an easy profile to write.
