Diamond Koda

The recent form makes for interesting reading. In its last six outings, Diamond Koda has finished third, fifth, unplaced, fifth, fourth, and second — a mixed but not hopeless picture. That runner-up finish stands out as a reminder that this horse can get genuinely close, and racing just one day ago, it remains very much an active contender rather than a horse winding down.

Most of its racing has come at Class 4 level, which is a solid mid-tier standard — not the very top of the sport, but a competitive enough grade where horses are fighting hard for every position. Diamond Koda has run 11 times at that level without winning, which raises the honest question of whether the win rate — currently zero from sixteen, a goose egg across an entire career — will ever change. That said, 11 places from 16 races tells you this horse is rarely out of the picture.

Charlie Hammond has ridden Diamond Koda in six of those races and is yet to ride it to a win, though the partnership keeps being given opportunities, which suggests the trainer Nick Kent, based in Brigg in Lincolnshire, still sees something worth persisting with. Kent's yard has sent out one winner this season, so this is a small, modestly resourced operation — and in that context, a horse that places as consistently as Diamond Koda does has genuine value to the team, even without a win on the board.

Whether Diamond Koda finally breaks through remains the great open question. At seven, time is not entirely on its side, but horses have won their first race at older ages. For now, it is a horse that rewards your attention without ever quite rewarding your optimism — and there is something oddly compelling about that.
