Desert Champion

Trainer Paul Midgley, whose yard in Westow, North Yorkshire has sent out 39 winners this season and is clearly capable of placing a horse well, has been candid about what went wrong. After that Chelmsford win, the handicapper immediately raised Desert Champion 10lb in the weights — essentially the sport's way of making life harder for a horse that has just won — and Midgley believes that jump in difficulty may have been too much, too soon. The horse hasn't run close to that winning form since. Midgley also raises an open question worth watching: is Desert Champion better suited to the all-weather artificial surface, like the one at Chelmsford, than he is to racing on turf? It's a meaningful distinction. Some horses simply go better on one surface than the other, and working that out can be the key that unlocks a career.

At Class 5 — the level where most of his races have come, which sits towards the lower end of the racing ladder — he has won 1 from 8, or 12% of his races at that grade. That's a modest record, but it does at least show the win is repeatable in the right conditions. Regular jockey Mark Winn has ridden him six times without a victory between them, though that reflects the horse's overall struggles rather than any single failing.

Desert Champion raced just yesterday, so the yard are clearly keeping him busy and looking for the right opportunity. Whether that means a return to the all-weather, a drop in class, or simply finding a day when everything clicks again, the Chelmsford win proves he can do it. The question is whether he can find those conditions once more.
