Daytona Lady

She is trained by Ruth Carr at Stillington in North Yorkshire, and that yard has been firing on all cylinders this season — 63 winners already, which tells you this is not a quiet backwater operation but a busy, well-run stable with horses in form. Daytona Lady has been part of that momentum. After a season that her trainer described as a little disappointing, she came back looking sharper this time around, and Carr had Wolverhampton circled on the calendar as the right place to get her rolling again. That proved a smart call: Daytona Lady won there on 21 April, exactly as the trainer had hoped.

Wolverhampton is genuinely her patch. Three wins from 10 races there — winning 3 in every 10 — makes her one of those horses who simply goes better at a particular track, for whatever reason of surface, shape, or distance. Plenty of horses never find a course they click with like that; she has found hers. Most of her racing has come at Class 5 level — the bread-and-butter end of the racing calendar — where she has won 6 of 35 races and clearly knows her job.

Her most regular partner in the saddle is James Sullivan, who has ridden her 23 times and won on her 4 of them. That kind of long-standing partnership matters: a jockey who knows a horse's quirks, and a horse who knows what to expect. After a run at Kempton that her rider Darragh Keenan suggested she simply didn't enjoy — some horses are fussy about tracks, just like people — she bounced back well at Southwell and has clearly come into this season in good heart.

She raced just yesterday, which means she is right in the thick of her campaign. With a Wolverhampton win already banked this spring and a trainer who knows exactly how to place her, Daytona Lady looks like a horse with more to give before the season is out.
