O'Meara knows what he has on his hands here. Speaking earlier this spring, he was bullish about the horse's prospects, noting that a surgical procedure last year had transformed him physically. He described Dark Cloud Rising as a big, scopey individual who had improved again through the winter, and was clearly eyeing up some attractive opportunities at Newmarket — including during Guineas weekend, one of the most prestigious fixtures in the British calendar.

The horse's most natural home has been Class 3 races — one rung below the very top level — where he has won 2 of his 9 starts (22%). That is not a horse struggling in deep water; that is a horse who belongs at that level and wins there.
