That solitary victory came at Ripon in April 2025, and it remains the only time Criminal Shore has reached the winner's enclosure. Since then, across its last six races, the form reads 4-4-4-5-8-4 — a string of near-misses and solid finishes that will be familiar to anyone who has followed this horse. Fourth place keeps cropping up like a recurring decimal. It is the kind of form that suggests a horse running consistently at its level without quite having the extra gear to go past the horses in front.

The distance record is worth looking at. Criminal Shore has run 11 times over a mile and one or two furlongs, and that is where its one win came from. Winning once from 11 attempts at those trips is a modest return — roughly 1 in every 11 races — but it is the part of the record where the horse has shown it can get competitive. At Class 4, which covers a solid middle tier of British racing, it has run eight times without winning. That is a slight puzzle, given its win came at that level, and it hints at a horse that can be frustrating to pin down.

The trainer is David O'Meara, a serious operation based in North Yorkshire that has sent out 107 winners already this season — a yard clearly firing on all cylinders. Daniel Tudhope, one of the better riders in the north, has partnered Criminal Shore five times without a win between them. That combination hasn't yet clicked, though Tudhope's association with O'Meara's horses more broadly is one of the stronger trainer-jockey partnerships in the region. Criminal Shore raced just yesterday, which means it is very much in active campaigning mode. Whether O'Meara can find the right race to get this horse back to the winner's circle — for the first time in over a year — is the question its supporters will be asking.
