Crafter

The most interesting thread in Crafter's story is Wolverhampton. He has run there 15 times — nearly half his entire career — and won twice, with his first career win coming there on 16 December 2023. That kind of familiarity with a venue matters more than people might think. Racecourses have different bends, different cambers, different surfaces, and horses genuinely do seem to click with certain tracks. Wolverhampton is clearly Crafter's place. His best distances tell a similar story of self-knowledge: over 1 mile 1 furlong to 1 mile 2 furlongs, he has won 2 from 13 races — roughly 1 in every 6 — which is a meaningfully better record than his overall numbers suggest.

His last win came at Lingfield Park on 21 November 2024, and he has not troubled the judge in the 6 races since. His recent form reads 5-3-6-4-5, which is a mixed picture — that third place shows there is still ability there, but a win has not come. He raced just yesterday, so he is right in the thick of an active campaign. The partnership with Billy Loughnane, son of his trainer Mark Loughnane who operates out of Rock Farm in Worcestershire, has not yet produced a win from 8 attempts together. The yard has sent out 25 winners this season, so the horses are clearly running well — Crafter just needs to time his moment.

At eight years old, horses tend to know exactly who they are. Crafter is a reliable, honest competitor who operates at the bottom tier of the sport, finds his best form over a mile and a bit, and has a particular affinity for Wolverhampton. If a win is coming, the smart money says it arrives there.
