The recent form makes for sobering reading. At the level Country Artiste typically competes at, that pattern is a concern. Five races at that grade and not a single win suggests either the horse needs to drop into easier company, or there is something — a different track, a change of conditions — that the team at Norton has yet to find.

Craig Lidster's yard has sent out 20 winners this season, so this is not a stable short of ideas or ability. The fact that a horse from a productive yard is still searching for its first win at three years old, after nine attempts, will not be lost on the trainer. After a break of 68 days — long enough to suggest a deliberate reset rather than just a gap between entries — Country Artiste returns with something to prove. Whether the freshener has made the difference is the question worth watching.
