The recent run of results makes for difficult reading: three finishes well down the field either side of that runner-up effort, and a blank in one race recorded simply as a dash in the form book, suggesting a race where things did not go to plan at all. For a four-year-old, time is not yet running out, but the pressure to convert promise into a win is starting to build.

What works in Cosi Bear's favour is the calibre of the stable behind the horse. James Fanshawe trains out of Newmarket, the heartland of British flat racing, and his yard has sent out 45 winners already this season — that is a genuinely productive operation, not a small string hoping to get lucky. When a trainer of that output keeps running a horse, it usually means they believe there is a race to be won somewhere. The question is where and when Cosi Bear finally finds it.
