Cooramook

The recent form makes for interesting reading. In the last six races, Cooramook has recorded finishes of 6-3-4-9-4-3, which is a mixed picture. The two third-place finishes either side of that difficult ninth suggest this is a horse that can perform on its day, but one that needs things to go right. The ninth-place run is the outlier — on most occasions Cooramook is placing in the top half of the field, which at this level counts for something.

That level is Class 5, the entry-level tier of British racing, and Cooramook has run there eight times without winning. For context, these are not small fields of weak rivals — Class 5 is where plenty of horses spend their entire careers, and getting beaten consistently at that level, while still placing, suggests a horse sitting in an awkward middle ground: good enough to be placed, not quite good enough to win. Whether that changes with more experience, or with a switch in conditions, is the question Mark Loughnane and his team at Rock Farm in Worcestershire will be asking.

Loughnane's yard has sent out 25 winners this season, which shows this is an operation that knows how to get horses into the winner's enclosure. The fact that Cooramook, who raced just one day ago and remains very much in active training, has not yet been one of them is a puzzle they have not yet solved. But the placing record — six times finishing close enough to collect prize money — means the horse is not simply making up the numbers. It is a horse looking for the right opportunity. Whether that moment arrives soon is the question that will keep bringing Cooramook back to the track.
