The nine-year-old, trained by Philip Kirby at his yard in East Appleton, North Yorkshire, has built a career that tells a familiar but quietly admirable story: not a star, not a headline act, but a horse that knows exactly what it is doing and where it does it best. With 7 wins and 15 places from 43 races — a win rate of roughly 1 in every 6 — Clean Getaway has been a consistent, workmanlike performer at the lower end of the sport, competing mostly in Class 5 races, which is where the bulk of everyday racing takes place in Britain.

But Sedgefield is where the story gets interesting. Five wins from 16 races there — nearly 1 in every 3 — is a remarkable record for any horse at any level. Most horses never dominate a course like that. The most recent of those wins came just last week, on 1st April 2026, on fast, dry ground that Kirby says clearly suits him. The trainer has been open about the fact that Clean Getaway needed time to find his rhythm — it took patience to get him going in the first place — but once things clicked, he delivered. "He knows how to win and he loves Sedgefield," Kirby said after that latest victory. "He's given us some really good days out."

Much of that success has been built alongside jockey Joe Williamson, who has ridden Clean Getaway in 36 of his 43 races. Their partnership has produced all 7 wins — a win rate of 19%, or roughly 1 in every 5 rides together. That kind of consistency between horse and rider over so many races is rare and speaks to a real understanding between the two.

Clean Getaway is not the sort of horse that ends up in the big-race conversations. He is a Class 5 regular who has earned his keep the hard way, race after race, mostly in the north of England, mostly at one particular track that seems to bring the best out of him. With Kirby's yard in good form — 34 winners already this season — and a horse who raced just yesterday and is clearly still in good nick, there is every reason to think another trip to Sedgefield might be in the diary before long.
