Charmaine

The most striking thing about Charmaine is what she does at Kempton Park. Two wins from just four races there is a remarkable record — that's winning half the time at a specific track, which is the kind of consistency that makes trainers keep coming back. Her first career win came at Kempton in September 2024, and she returned to win there again as recently as 5 May 2025. When a horse keeps finding its best form at one venue, there's usually something about the track — the tight bends, the synthetic surface, the way the race tends to be run — that simply suits how she moves. Whatever it is, Kempton clearly agrees with her.

James Fanshawe's yard in Newmarket has been in fine form this season, sending out 45 winners, and Charmaine fits the profile of a horse the team understands well. Daniel Muscutt, who rides her most often, has won 2 of their 9 races together — a 22% win rate, or just over 1 in every 4 — and that kind of established partnership tends to matter. A jockey who knows a horse's quirks can find that extra half-length when it counts.

One other thing worth noting: Charmaine genuinely thrives on wet, muddy ground. She's won 2 of her 5 races in those conditions — a 40% win rate — which is significantly better than her overall average. In a sport where so much depends on the weather, having a horse that actually improves when it rains is a real advantage.

Her recent form reads 4-2-6-2-3-3, and she hasn't won in her last six races, so the wins have dried up since May. But she raced just yesterday and is clearly in good health and active training. At Class 4 level — the grade she competes at most — she's won 3 of 7 races, which is 43%, or nearly 1 in every 2. The ability is there. It may just be a matter of conditions clicking into place.
