Charlie Mason

Most of his work is done at Class 5 level, the bread-and-butter tier of British racing where the fields are competitive and nothing comes easy. He's won 3 of his 23 races at that level — around 1 in every 8 — which is a perfectly respectable return. His first win came at Kempton Park back in September 2023, and his most recent at Doncaster in September 2025, a gap of almost exactly two years between those bookends with three wins in between.

The last six races, though, have been a search for form. Finishing positions of 4-5-4-2-7-7 (reading back to front from the most recent) show a horse that's been placed once in that run but hasn't hit the front. He hasn't won in eight months, and the current sequence suggests something isn't quite clicking right now — whether that's the competition, conditions, or just one of those lean spells every racehorse goes through.

In the saddle, Jack Doughty has partnered Charlie Mason most often, riding him nine times for one win together — roughly 1 in every 9 rides. Behind the scenes, the horse is trained by Tony Carroll, whose yard in Cropthorne, Worcestershire has been in serious form this season, sending out 136 winners. Carroll is clearly a trainer who knows how to place a horse to give it a chance, and with Charlie Mason still active — he raced just yesterday — the team will be looking to end that eight-month wait for a win sooner rather than later.
