That said, one race is barely a sample at all. Plenty of horses that go on to achieve something meaningful looked ordinary on debut, and at two years old, Celtic Charioteer is still very much a work in progress. The fact it raced just one day ago means there will almost certainly be more opportunities ahead this season.
Where there is genuine cause for optimism is in the stable. Trainer James Ferguson operates out of Newmarket — the spiritual home of British flat racing — and his yard has produced 26 winners already this season, which speaks to a team that knows how to get horses ready to perform. Ferguson is not a trainer who fills his entries with hopeless causes, so Celtic Charioteer will get its chance to show whether that debut was a blip or a sign of things to come.
